红宝石中极品的颜色被称为“鸽血红”（Pigeon’s Blood）。这种颜色的称谓最早可追溯到20世纪初期的英国，据说源自中国或印度，是传统上用来形容红宝石颜色的最好词语。这种红色除了纯净、饱和、明亮之外，更给人以强烈的“燃烧的火”的感觉。真正缅甸出产的“鸽血红”红宝石已经近乎绝迹，基本只出现在各大国际拍卖会上或者资深收藏家手中。

尖晶石 | Spinel

尖晶石的主要成分为镁氧化铝，莫氏硬度为8，与碧玺、海蓝宝石硬度一致，颜色比较多样。由于尖晶石的莫氏硬度低于红宝石，其市场和收藏价值一直远低于红宝石。近几年随着高品质红宝石资源匮乏而价格高涨，正红色尤其是“鸽血红”色的尖晶石作为红宝石的替代品，其市场价格逐渐向红宝石的水平靠拢。人们将尖晶石作为结婚22周年的纪念宝石。

随着近些年坦桑尼亚热粉色（Hot Pink）尖晶石和缅甸霓虹色（Neon Light）尤其是“绝地武士”尖晶石（Jedi Spinel）被中国市场追捧，这些颗粒较小的粉红色尖晶石的价格也开始接近正红色尖晶石。

现在的顶级红色尖晶石主要来自阿富汗、缅甸、斯里兰卡、东非和越南矿区，CEYLON STAR所选用的红色尖晶石就来自这些地区。
